The Bangla language is spoken by nearly 300 million people in Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Bangladeshi বাংলা speaker is reading out a poem in Bengali. Bengali is one of the Eastern Indo-Aryan languages which are used primarily as lingua franca for communication among different ethnic groups in India. The name "Bengali" originates from an Arabic word meaning “northwestern” or “northern”, symbolizing its emergence as a prominent regional power under the Delhi Sultanate. Bengali was originally written in the Bengali script which is currently used in Bangladesh and Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and northern Nagaland. Bangladesh has made efforts to implement digital technology to use Bangla as an electronic language for technology-enabled business in Bangladesh, however using Bangla as a medium of communication in the information field is still in its infancy.
Bangla could be used in various platforms like phone, tablet PC etc.
Bangla is the official language used by all three major political parties (BNP, JBM and BNP) of Bangladesh including Mohajur Board, Chittagong University etc.
Some examples of online Bangla resources:
Bangla has a vast amount of information available online, however it still has a relatively limited presence on the internet. In fact, research shows that only 1% of all web pages in the world are in Bangla. In Bangladesh, less than 0.3% of all websites contain Bangla content. This can be attributed to the lack of awareness among the public about the potential use of Bangla on the internet and a lack of resources for training speakers particularly in rural areas. Bangla has the potential to be the most dominant language in South Asia, in terms of its numbers of users. It is one of the most spoken languages in India, with speakers totaling around 200 million, which isn’t too far behind Hindi’s number of 328 million. This number does not include Bangladesh, where an estimated 154 million people speak Bangla. Another online project named "Cyber Bangla" seeks to expand this presence by hosting content in both English and Bangla on its website. The site's goal is to integrate Bangla speakers all over the world into one common community. The word "Bangla" is named after the ancient kingdom of Bengal (also known as Bang), which corresponds to modern-day Bangladesh in East Asia. The name "Bangla" was originally used for the region in ancient India, and played an important role in Sanskrit. The term "Bangla" entered into English in the 19th century when it was used by indigenous Bengali language speakers to refer to their mother tongue. Before this time, it couldn't be referred to with any other word than Bangla anywhere in the world because it had not been used by anybody else before the 19th century.
